DIY Facial Cleansing Gel

A little over a year ago, I began using essential oil face cleanser and I haven’t looked back since! I began by using a face wash I purchased from a company, and I really liked it. I then decided to attempt to mix up my own. I used some of the ingredients from the original face wash I purchased, and did a little research about essential oils for skin care on Plant Therapy’s website, as well as Dr. Axe and Dr. Z.

The first recipe I created used tea tree oil. While I still use tea tree oil in the laundry, I stopped using it in my face care products. Instead, I began using thyme oil.

Thyme essential oil, according to Dr. Axe, promotes healthy skin. It also balances hormones, so that’s a win win in my mind!

I also use frankincense essential oil for its anti-aging effectslavender oil for its soothing propertiesrosemary oil to help tone skin, and grapefruit oil for its ability to protect skin.

The base of this face wash is aloe vera gel. I purchased a 4 ounce bottle from Plant Therapy, but I only use half when I mix up some face wash.

Next, I add 25 drops of Clear Complex carrier oil. This blend includes evening primrose oil and vitamin E oil, as well as a few other carrier oils. It is formulated to lightly nourish oily skin.

I then add one squirt of unscented Castile soap. I don’t really measure this ingredient, I usually just squirt it into the bottle and count to 5. (Really scientific, right??)

Last, I add the essential oils mentioned above. I abided by their recommended dilutions, which are available on the bottles of Plant Therapy’s oils. I added 5 drops each of thyme and frankincense oils, and added 3 drops each of pink grapefruitlavender, and rosemary.

Everything is separated when I first add all of the ingredients to the bottle. But once I shake it up, everything combines and the Castile soap actually turns the gel a pearly white color. It’s pretty fascinating, actually!

I really like the texture of this face wash. It is silky smooth, and feels great on my face! It is not foaming, just a plain gel. Be sure to keep this out of your eyes, since there are essential oils in the mixture!

I use this cleansing gel on my skin, which has the tendency to be oily. For dry skin, I encourage you to do some research about essential oils for dry skin. Plant Therapy has Near Perfection and DermiSoothe carrier oil blends that you may want to try in place of Clear Complex.

If you are looking for a natural facial cleanser, I encourage you to try this recipe!

Do you use a natural face wash? Do you currently make your own DIY facial cleanser? What oils do you prefer to use? I would love to hear your ideas!
